so, i arrive at JFK, and my flight says CANCELED on it, even though i had just checked on it a few hours before and everything was fine. thoughts of them telling me there were no more flights and that i'd have to come back tomorrow kept swimming through my head, but Jet Blue has to be better than that, right? they didn't cancel it because of "weather", they canceled it because airlines can't afford to fly flights that aren't full --- they just moved as many people as possible to the later orlando flights (which they had 4 of) and then people like me who miss the cutoff get told to come back tomorrow -- which is what the ticket counter lady told me.

"NO, i have to be there today, it is important"

well, she got me a flight to Fort Lauderdale that was leaving in 30 minutes. i snatched it and ran through security and barely made boarding. And now I'm sitting here in the Fort Lauderdale airport which thankfully has free Wi-Fi and going to figure out what to do next. I'm gonna try to convince Jet Blue to pay for my rental car to Orlando -- luckily it's only 215 miles to the hotel.

I HATE AIRLINES.

if anyone who is in Orlando sees this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure i'm registered...

I lived!

And, I think, revisions done. After a couple of long stern grovels through the prose, and some making the plot make sense, it's become a story I am actually quite proud of.

...and now I get to have a beer and watch the telly.

P.S. still in love with the new computer. I'm reasonably certain it makes me write better. Like new sneakers make you run better, you know? You know!

...YOU DON'T KNOW? Oh, I'm sorry.

Significant changes are in the works. Maureen goes on a date.

Note- I am going on hiatus for a month to work on marketing my book, Playing For Keeps, which comes out August 25. In the meantime, enjoy the song Brain Food by Sudden Death!

Macro in Memorium

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 3:36 PM
Hi, all. I'm new here. One of my kitties had to be put down today because he was badly losing his battle with cancer, and I thought it might lift my spirits to offer up a blank of him to be macro'ed.

Without further ado... )

Warbreaker 6.1!

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 3:23 PM

At long last, I proudly present the final electronic draft of WARBREAKER.  This is Version 6.1, and includes the edits made by suggestion from my editor, along with other numerous tweaks to language, foreshadowing, and some small characterization changes.  The draft includes a brand new Lightsong scene as well.  You will find a short revision explanation at the end of the book, explaining in a tad more detail the changes I made.

From here, the book will go to copyedit.  I will still be tweaking the manuscript, but now it will all happen on paper, and my electronic copy won't get updated.  So if you want to read the final version, you'll have to grab a copy when it gets released next summer in hardcover!  As always, thank you for reading.  Enjoy!

(Note, my plan is to update the html version of the book I'm posting on my website to be 6.1 instead of 4.2.  Also, note that 6.1 is in Manuscript Format, which means that there are underlines instead of italics.  Feel free to change those for readability, if you wish.  Also, if anyone wants to port 6.1 to PDF form with bookmarks for the chapters--or to palm format or other mobile reader formats--I'll happily post those as well.)

Who wants chocolate lava cake?

(It's actually not that bad; it's about the latest exhibit from the guy who did Piss Christ. And yes, it has to do with #2, but the few pictures at the above link are quite tame and look like dirt or chocolate muffins or something.)

slashdot:

sciencehabit writes:

"For anyone who still believes that boys are better at math than girls, a massive new study published today in Science shows there's no difference. 'Among students with the highest test scores, the team did find that white boys outnumbered white girls by about two to one. Among Asians, however, that result was nearly reversed. Hyde says that suggests that cultural and social factors, not gender alone, influence how well students perform on tests.' But the researchers do note a disturbing trend towards omitting harder kinds of math questions from standardized tests."

Rush plays Tom Sawyer on Rock Band

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 11:46 AM
via boingboing, Mike Ricci and some friends Rush attempted to play Tom Saywer on Rock Band prior to their appearance on the Colbert Report. "They failed to complete the song after 30 seconds, scoring 31% on 'expert mode.'"

Geddy seems to have lost the upper part of his range, or maybe it's just because they weren't warmed up.
